2001: [U] FILES IN REVIEW...
January: IBM
announced that their software would feature built-in restrictions
that would limit how many times you could listen to a copied CD,
hopefully providing more control on burned music. A radio station
in Wisconsin was fined $7,000 for playing an unedited version of
"The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem, stating
that the lyrics of the song were not appropriate to play on-air.
Leigh Nash from Sixpence None The Richer became a
spokeswoman for the cosmetic company Urban Decay, being featured
in ads that came out in March.
February: The Newsboys and Audio
Adrenaline took part in a live satellite broadcast concert.
Sponsored by World Vision, it was seen in over 150 cities.
They also announced the details on the forthcoming summer's Festival
Con Dios tour, which featured bands like Superchic[k],
Pillar, The Benjamin Gate, and the Supertones.
Marilyn Mason made it into the news when he was charged with
two counts of public indecency because of the costumes he wore during
his Guns, God, and Government tour in Italy.
March: John Foreman of Switchfoot
was honored with a "Les Paul Horizon Award" for
most promising up-and coming new guitarist. People logged on to
BELIEF.NET
so they could read an interview with Bono from U2.
He talked about God, the Grammys, and their upcoming tour.
Delirious returned from a trip working with Hope HIV in South
Africa, helping some of the ten million children who are orphaned
through HIV and AIDS.
April: Big Tent Revival announced
that they were taking a break, which some said would be permanent.
Fine China was a featured artists through ABERCROMBIE.COM.
People were able to vote for their song "We Rock Harder
Than You Ever Knew." MXPX joined Blink 182,
Jurassic 5 and Oleander on a new compilation created
for Target by the clothing company Mossimo.
May: LA Symphony joined the NBA
and Yahoo! Sports Rhythm 'n' Rims tour, which featured
an interactive eighteen wheel transformer vehicle that unfolded
into a basketball park and stage. "Collide" and
"Drift Away" by FONO were used on a national
radio campaign for Miller Draft after being discovered by
the company through MP3.COM.
Universal Music Group had just acquired MP3.com for $372
million.
June: The members of Jars Of Clay
were presented with degrees from Greenville College, the
school where they formed and attended untile they left to continue
with their music. Music from Further Seems Forever was featured
on the Weezer tribute album called "Surf Wax America."
Artists like P Diddy, Will Smith, and Jay-Z
joined politicians and religious leaders in New York for the first
ever Hip Hop Summit. It was created so they could talk about
topics like the effect rap music has on people, censorship, and
the government.
July: President Bush pledged that
he would be working more with the leaders of the entertainment industry,
encouraging them that they would need to have less violence, substance
abuse and sexuality in their product. A cover story in Newsweek
that focused on the Christian music industry, the Festival Con
Dios tour, and bands like the Newsboys, Pillar,
and P.O.D. had people talking about how this is a valid form
of music.
August: Ghoti Hook announced that
they were leaving Tooth and Nail Records, with plans for
their upcoming EP to come out through VELVETBLUEMUSIC.COM.
Labels like Sparrow, Forefront, 5 Minute Walk,
Gotee, and Flicker partnered with the company Streamwaves,
giving those online access to music and behind the scenes news from
their bands. According to Soundscan, music sales so far for
the year were down, causing some to worry and others predicting
that they would increase by the fall.
September: The attack on America changed
music forever. In respect for the victims and their families, the
Emmys and the Latin Grammy Awards were canceled. The
Festival Con Dios tour partnered with the Salvation Army.
At each show a representative was there collecting money for the
families of police officers, firefighters, and emergency workers
who lost their lives. P.O.D. released to stores "Satellite,"
debuting at number six on The Billboard Top 200.
October: It was announced that Jennifer
Knapp's album "Kansas" was certified gold,
selling over 500,00 copies. Just days before they were to head out,
DC Talk announced that they were postponing their "Solo"
tour until January. "Collide" from Fono
was featured on the soundtrack and on the trailor for "Cold
Fusion," the new extreme snowboarding film by Warren
Miller.
November: information about a new digital
copyright battle was released. Companies selling quick clips of
songs as ring tones for cell phones were accused of not paying fees
for the rights to use the music. Stavesacre announced that
they signed with NITRO Records. Started by members of The
Offspring, they joined labelmates AFI and The Vandals.
New music in stores included "Lift" by Audio
Adrenaline, "The Way I Am" by Jennifer Knapp,
and Five Iron Frenzy's "Electric Boogaloo."
December: December 11th was declared the
National Day Of Hip Hop. Jars Of Clay helped raise
over $10,000 dollars at a benefit for the African Leadership.
It goes to help with education in the communities where they offer
training. Lifehouse won big at the Billboard Music Awards,
taking home awards for Best Male New Artist, Hot 100 Single
of the Year, and Rock New Artist of the Year.
