2005 In Review

Notable 2005 releases

Project 86 came back in 2005 with the hard-hitting “And the Rest Will Follow,” a CD which explored the band’s roots as well as smoother harmonies, louder rage, and a truly dynamic sonic range. They followed it up with a headlining tour that featured Spoken among others, and a “making-of” DVD (which technically came out before the CD, but whatever).

HXC veterans Demon Hunter gave us “The Triptych,” their third CD, which featured a few new members in the ranks: Ethan Luck from the Supertones, and Yogi, formerly of Holland. The release also featured an old school metal sound, amplified by the band’s cover of Prong’s classic “Snap Yo Fingers Snap Yo Neck.”

Perhaps the most anticipated release of all was from Switchfoot. The guys followed up the success of 2003’s “The Beautiful Letdown” with 2005's “Nothing is Sound,” which featured the instant classic “Stars.” Fans of the band’s heartfelt lyrics and lead singer John Foreman’s crooning vocals also had ample opportunity to see the band on TV, performing on everything from Conan to Leno to the “Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

More news from 2005

One piece of news from 2005 came from Brian "Head" Welch, one of the founding members of Korn. Welch decided to leave the band because of his newfound relationship with Jesus. He explains, “I distanced myself from Korn for probably a year and a half, two years, but I found my way out and want to help anyone that wants to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Superchick would like to thank you for a great 2005. They sold over 100,000 copies of “Beauty From Pain,” had two number one singles, played over 170 shows in seven countries, and ended up at number eight on the BillboardHeatseekers” chart. Busy year, huh?

2005 news that, um, wasn’t…

Mutemath, which includes former Earthsuit member Paul Meany, was supposed to spend this past spring finishing their first full-length project and then release it on June 20th, the five-year anniversary of the release of “Kaleidoscope Superior,” Earthsuit’s first release. Yeah, didn’t happen. Word has it they’ll be getting the CD in stores sometime in the spring of 2006, but only time will tell.

In February of this year, FM Static finally updated their often-neglected website with some supposedly good news: they were working on their sophomore record and hoped to have it out by late summer or early fall. Instead? They didn’t update the website for the rest of the year, and failed to produce a new album. Kinda depressing, actually. We would tell you to log on to their website for an update, but, yeah, you know how that goes…

PAX 217 had originally planned to work on a new full-length album and to release it before the end of the year. They even canceled an entire tour just to focus on writing new material. Instead, they ended up breaking up before the end of the year. So while they technically made news, it wasn’t the kind we were looking for.
